ESI calculator: employee and employer contribution

Enter gross monthly wages to see whether ESI applies, and what the employee and employer pay.

Wages for ESI this month—
Employee share (0.75%, deducted from salary)—
Employer share (3.25%, paid on top)—
Total paid to ESIC—

An estimate, rounded up to the next rupee as ESIC does. Employees whose average daily wage is up to ₹176 do not pay the employee share, but the employer still pays 3.25%. If there was loss of pay, enter the wages actually earned for the month.

How ESI is calculated

  • Employee: 0.75% of gross wages, deducted from salary.
  • Employer: 3.25% of gross wages, paid on top. Together that is 4%.
  • Limit: ESI applies when gross wages are ₹21,000 a month or less, or ₹25,000 for persons with disability.
  • Overtime: it counts in the contribution for the month, but not when deciding whether someone crosses the limit.

On ₹18,000 the employee pays ₹135 and the employer pays ₹585, a total of ₹720. The monthly contribution is due by the 15th of the following month. The ESI calculation guide covers contribution periods and more examples.

FAQ

ESI calculator questions

What is the ESI limit now?

₹21,000 a month, or ₹25,000 for persons with disability. As of 31 October 2026 we found no notification raising it.

Is ESI calculated on gross or basic salary?

On gross wages, not on basic pay alone.

Does ESI stop as soon as a salary crosses ₹21,000?

No. Contributions continue on actual wages until the end of the contribution period, 30 September or 31 March, and the employee goes out of coverage from the next period.

Let payroll handle ESI

AiroHR applies the limit, the contribution periods and the rounding, and prepares your ESIC data every month.
